JavaScript - Getting and Setting the value from an input text field with jQuery

I have an input text field

<input type="text" id="empName"/>

I need to write a value to this field and retrieve the existing value using jQuery? How can I do that?

Set the value of the input text field whose id is empName

$('#empName').val('John');

Get the value of the empName field

var name = $('#empName').val();

There is an important distinction, however ... $('#empName').val(); returns the current value of the text field, for instance whatever the user typed something there after a page load. But $('#empName').attr('value') returns the original value that was there before editing the input field, the one in the DOM/HTML markup itself. -- Yannis Alexis, Sep 23, 2016
